Joint seminar-conference of
the Shevchenko Scientific Society and The Technical-Scientific Terminology
Standards Committee
On:
“Linguistic Analysis of Terminology
in the Ukrainian Interface to XP Professional.”
1.
The
Ukrainian Technical Terminology Committee, comprised of members from the
Technical Standards Committee on Government Standard Usage of
Scientific-Technical Terminology and the Ukrainian Ministry of Education,
resolved that, despite Microsoft’s
good intentions, the released product referred to as Ukrainian Version of XP
Professional fell short of meeting Ukrainian language standards and therefore
should not be referred to as Ukrainian.
2.
Qualified
translators, who are recognized experts in both English and Ukrainian, should
help develop the Ukrainian localization from the original English version and
not through some intermediary language.
3.
All
proper English names that occur in the Interface should be translated or
transliterated, including program names and their parts.
4.
Any
software text should comply with terminology and its meaning as stated in the
document: Ukrainian Government Standards 3966 “ Principles and Rules for Developing Standard Terms and
their Meaning.”
5.
The Ukrainian text that appears in a
Ukrainian localization should be checked and verified in Ukraine by terminology
experts before its release. Furthermore, the experts should comply with the
accepted standard terminology.
6.
The
organizers of the seminar-conference must present the above conclusions and
conditions to the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science, Microsoft
Corporation and any possible sponsors.
