The Linguistic Analysis of Terminology in Microsoft’s Software Products Adapted for Ukrainian 

 

On May 17 2003, the Shevchenko Scientific Society held a seminar to discuss the results of the linguistic analysis of terminology in the Ukrainian Windows Interface Pack adapted for the Russian version of Microsoft(R) Windows XP Professional December 2002 release.  The Interface Pack ‘s release was announced on January 3rd, 2003 and demonstrated in Kyiv by the Microsoft Moscow-affiliate on February 18, 2003.   Members of the Technical Standards Committee on Government Standard Usage of Scientific-Technical Terminology and the Ukrainian Ministry of Education did the analysis.  The most detailed analysis was done on files in the folders HELP\html\OFMAIN10\html (540 Microsoft Office Help files), and Wwintl_dll (146 files of text messages in the dynamic link library).

 

Note: In the fallowing, we will denote in bold type English and Russian words, and Ukrainian expressions. 

The Readme file, accompanying the Ukrainian Windows Interface Pack, denotes the main shortcomings of this product (problematic parts of citations are underlined):  it is installed in the Russian version of Windows XP Professional; Ukrainian interface is implemented only in most of  the user interface; after installation, some commands of the user interface remain in the Russian language; system’s scripting language changes to Russian; it is recommended to leave the operating system’s scripting language in Russian;  some system components will remain in the Russian language;  some wizards and dialogues may contain buttons in Russian, such as “ОК”, “Отмена” (Cancel), “Назад” (Back), “Далее” (Next), “Применить” (Apply) etc.

 

All of the mentioned deficiencies of the „Ukrainianized” interface are due to the fact it was implemented as an add-on to the Russian version, where only parts were  „Ukrainianized”.  Most of the deficiencies are fundamental, impossible to eliminate; in particular, bi- and trilingual mixtures of words in commands, messages, and windows, which are fundamental to the system.  Files in Wwintl contain altogether 9,900 messages, among which almost 2,000 are in English, e.g.   LetterReturnAddressSF, ExportPicturewithMetafile, DefaultPictureBullet, and 455 use a mixture of two or three languages, e.g.: “Необхідно вказати Entry або EntryAutoText”, “Для перегляду поточних параметрів двічі клацніть значок Язык и стандарты на панелі управління Windows”. 

 

Among the Help files found in OFMAIN10\html, only about 20% of the hypertexts are exclusively in Ukrainian, and the rest contain English words (most often “Microsoft Office”, and some acronyms, such as FTP, CTRL, URL, DEL, etc.), or a multilingual mixture e.g.,  (встановіть прапорець Требуется безопасное подключение (SSL), Виберіть параметр Создание ярлыка для узла, а потім натисніть кнопку Далее). 

Please note, that in the previous example, Ukrainian is in italics, Russian is bolded, and English is in regular text.

 

Thus the main task is: how to eliminate this mixture of the three languages?  Obviously, if the Ukrainian localization were implement as it is usually done [by Microsoft] for other languages (from the original English), then the Russian language would not be present.  Ukrainian orthographic rules do not make provisions for the inclusion of foreign language words into Ukrainian text.  However, Chapter IIІ in The Orthographic Rules for Words of Foreign Origin provides guidelines for the transliteration of foreign words, and lists many examples of foreign words written in Ukrainian, using Cyrillic (See Chapter IV. Orthographic Rules for Proper Names). 

Briefly, English words that are not proper names should simply be translated into Ukrainian and proper names can either be translated or transliterated.

 

The main question is: which proper names of packets, programs, protocols, interfaces, libraries, templates, fonts, functions, menu options, keys, files, etc. should be translated (transliterated) and which should be left without change?  Perhaps, names and extensions of system files should remain in the original. But everything that has been translated into Russian (option menus, fonts, etc.) should be translated into Ukrainian.  However, the Russian language version with its considerable number of  English words is not a model for us.  Ultimately it would be preferable to take, as an example, the French and German localization as models, where everything is done to insure the integrity of the language.  We can begin with translations (transliterations) of the numerous program titles e.g., we have as choices:  Вікна (Vikna) or  Windows, Служба (Sluzhba) or Office, Доступ (Dostup) or Access, Провідник (Providnyk) or Explorer, Майстер (Majster) or Wizard, Довідка (Dovidka) or Help, Слово (Slovo) or Word etc.  As for company names, it is easy: Майкрософт or Мікрософт.  The above underlined names are already in use, and therefore this practice of translation (transliteration) of names should be actively implemented throughout the localization process.

   We now turn our attention to the Ukrainian texts in the Interface Packet.

The first misuse, which immediately catches the eye of the terminologist, is – the extensive use of verbal nouns with the ending  “-ka”, e.g. “оцінка” to indicate actions and/or events.  This is in contrast to the guidelines specified in the publication: Government Standards of Ukraine DSTU 3966-2000  (Terminology. Principles and Regulations for the Development of Standards of Terms and Definition of Concepts), the contents of which have been approved by The Institute of the Ukrainian Language of The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.  Paragraph H.9.10 specifies the proper usage of words for the designation of an action (evaluation), an event (estimation) and consequence of an action (result).

 

Contrary to these guidelines, Wwintl files contain about 500 nouns with “-ka” endings that are used as names for actions.  Words such as: (listed from most frequent to least frequent occurrence) вставка , настройка, правка, розмітка, розбивка, установка, вкладка, виноска, заливка, підстановка, розсилка, відправка, обробка, прив’язка, розкладка, etc.  Also pidpiska  (signature) appears in the reference files.

There is an overuse of verbal nouns ending in “-ння”, producing a risible effect. Document DSTU 3966-2000 recommends the use of the infinitive of the verb side by side with the verbal noun ending in “-ння” (Paragraph G.9.1.1), for example: видовжування (видовжувати) [imperfective aspect],  видовження (видовжити) [perfective aspect].

All in all, nouns ending in “-ння” are present in 2,045 messages in the Wwintel files.  This constitutes 29% of all messages in these files.  In 450 of these messages, nouns ending in “-ння” are present multiple number of times.  We propose, first of all, that verb forms ending in “-ти”, which are natural and convenient substitutes for verbal nouns ending in “-ння”, be used as names of commands, conditions, and processes (of actions and events).  Also, it is advisable to use participles.  Moreover, verbal nouns can be replaced by adjectives or adverbs, e.g.: панель малювання > малювальна панель.  

Here are several expressions and their proposed replacements (nouns ending in “-ння”, are italicized):

Зняття блокування оновлення виділених полів > Зняти заблокованість оновляння виділених полів

Припинення порівнювання форматування і повернення інспектора формату до звичайного режиму > Припинити порівнювати формати і повернути інспектора формату у звичайний режим

З наближенням терміну закінчення дії підписки виводяться повідомлення, які нагадують про необхідність поновити її. > Наприкінці терміну чинності передплати повідомляється про потребу її поновити

Conclusions:

1.                   It is necessary to produce a genuine Ukrainian localization of Windows XP, and discontinue the use of the existing  “concocted” product.  It is preferable to use the English or Russian version instead.

2.                   A Ukrainian localization should have all the English names and terms translated or transliterated into Ukrainian, with the exception of file names and key words in the utilized computer languages.

3.                   Exclude any Russian-Ukrainian jargon and adhere to the specifications given in the terminology manual: DSTU 3966-2000.
